Taking bold steps towards impact

Claudia Aguguo's journey from research to real-world innovation with YES

The journey from research to real-world impact can be complex and multifaceted. Claudia Aguguo, a PhD student at the University of Reading and finalist in YES21, has navigated this path with remarkable success. Her involvement in Your Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES) and subsequent achievements, including securing the LifeArc-AUTM Technology Transfer Fellowship, serve as a clear reminder of the power of inclusive innovation programmes.

Claudia's research focuses on developing microneedle patches for drug delivery, targeting neglected tropical diseases. As a pharmacist, she has seen firsthand the challenges of administering medications and is driven by a passion to improve patient care. This passion led her to YES, where she discovered the potential to translate academic research into marketable solutions.

Eye-opening experience

Initially, Claudia held common misconceptions about entrepreneurship. "I never saw myself as someone that would thrive in business because I had myths about what an entrepreneur looks like," she recalls. However, YES dismantled these myths and opened her eyes to the possibilities available to her. The program's emphasis on problem-solving and innovation resonated deeply with her, challenging her preconceived notions and inspiring her to explore new avenues.

Reflecting on her experience, Claudia highlights the valuable lessons she learned through YES “I was inspired by the case studies of previous YES participants who went on to successful ventures” she says. This exposure to real-world applications of research and the success stories of previous participants reinforced her belief in the impact she could make.

Technology transfer fellowship

One pivotal moment in Claudia's journey was attending a YES-hosted career event at the GSK Stevenage Campus in March 2023.

It was here that she learned about the LifeArc-AUTM Technology Transfer Fellowship from a panel of speakers, including Dr Anji Miller, a Senior Business Manager at LifeArc who leads their fellowship programmes. "Anji's talk gave me a better understanding of technology transfer and motivated me to apply for the fellowship."

The application process for the fellowship was both challenging and rewarding. Claudia had to submit a CV, cover letter, references, and undergo an interview.

Hearing about the career history of Anji, someone of a similar background, and receiving support from my PhD supervisor and the Knowledge Transfer Centre (KTC) at the University of Reading boosted my confidence.

Stereotypes and discouraging statistics

Claudia's advice for those considering similar opportunities is to "believe in yourself and surround yourself with a reliable support network." She emphasises the importance of representation and taking steps outside of your comfort zone. "Don’t be put off by stereotypes and discouraging statistics. Embrace your uniqueness and take a step towards what you’re interested in because you have something valuable to offer to the world,” she encourages.

YES significantly influenced Claudia's career trajectory. "I didn't know about technology transfer before YES," she admits. The programme not only introduced her to this field but also provided the foundation for her success in the fellowship. Mentorship from Dr Simon Cutler, an alumni of YES97, and the support of the YES community have been instrumental in her journey.

Invaluable experience and networking opportunities

Participation in conferences during the fellowship has been another highlight for Claudia. She presented at the ASTP conference in Seville and attended the AUTM conference in San Diego, gaining invaluable experience and networking opportunities. "Presenting at an international conference was a great experience," she notes, underscoring the importance of such platforms in her professional development.

As Claudia looks to the future, she remains committed to improving health outcomes through driving the commercialisation and adoption of innovation. I'm excited to see what my next steps will be," she says, reflecting the same enthusiasm and curiosity that propelled her into YES and beyond.
