It was wonderful to take part in YES because it was so different from our daily lives as PhD students. We undertook patent searches, prepared cash flows and developed a marketing strategy – a whole world we didn’t know about before!
YES was a terrific experience from the very start until the last pitch. It presented the perfect opportunity to gain experience in commercialising an idea - pitching to potential investors and learning from their feedback.
I learnt how to develop a robust, transparent business case ... I don’t have business skills – I’m a scientist – but I was willing to learn and now I know how to cost, protect and sell.
The competition has taught us the skills for transforming science into a start-up. Not only did we develop knowledge and skills related to marketing and finance but we also learnt about (international) regulations, scientific dossier and intellectual property. Overall, it was a great experience which will likely have a lasting impact on our careers.
YES was an exceptional experience! We stepped out of our comfort zones to achieve something that was out of reach until we received mentoring. It was a great learning opportunity on how we might translate research into marketable products. Ultimately, we have opened new pathways for our future, through the amazing networks we’ve built.
